喻世明言.书前版画.明.冯梦龙编撰.可一居士评.明末衍庆堂刊本

《喻世明言》是明末清初冯梦龙编撰的白话小说集。此版本共二十四卷，取《古今小说》二十一卷，以及《警世通言》中的一卷和《醒世恒言》中的两卷，每卷为一个短篇小说，多数为宋元明旧作话本小说，书前有版画二十四对幅。此为明末衍庆堂刊本，题：可一居士评，墨浪主人校。
《喻世明言》是“三言”的第一部，四十卷，收话本四十种。它首次刊行时，名《古今小说》，扉页上有书坊主天许斋的识语：“本斋购得古今名人演义一百二十种，先以三分之一为初刻云。”目录又题“古今小说一刻总目”，可见这“古今小说”是“三言”的总名。后衍庆堂重刻时，才题名《喻世明言》。
《古今小说》天许斋刻本扉页上有题识，其中说到“本斋购得古今名人演义一百二十种，现已三分之一为初刻云”，而且在目录之前也有“古今小说一刻”的字样，说明《古今小说》最初计划为几本小说集的总书名。但该书二刻、三刻出版时都有了各自名称《警世通言》和《醒世恒言》，而一刻《古今小说》再版时标题改为《喻世明言》，因此《古今小说》如今只是《喻世明言》的别称。而该版《喻世明言》只有二十四卷，取《古今小说》二十一卷，以及《警世通言》中的一卷和《醒世恒言》中的两卷，题有“可一居士评，墨浪主人校”，但其是何许人也，均不详。今日所说的《喻世明言》指的是原《古今小说》四十卷本。（介绍参考）
此《喻世明言》二十四卷，衍庆堂刊刻本，题《重刻增补古今小说》，其实是根据《古今小说》残本二十一篇，加上《警世通言》一篇（《假神仙大闹华光庙》）和《醒世恒言》二篇（《白玉娘忍苦成夫》、《张廷秀逃生救父》）拼凑而成。
Yu Shi Ming Yan is a collection of vernacular novels compiled by Feng Menglong at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. This version consists of 24 volumes, including 21 volumes from “Ancient and Modern Novels”, one volume from “Warning to the World”, and two volumes from “Awakening to the World”. Each volume consists of a short story, most of which are old works of the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. There are 24 pairs of prints in front of the book. This is the publication of Yanqing Hall at the end of the Ming Dynasty, titled “Ke Yi Ju Shi Ping, Mo Lang Master School”.

The “Yu Shi Ming Yan” is the first part of the “Three Words”, consisting of forty volumes and a collection of forty versions. When it was first published, it was called “Ancient and Modern Novels”. On the title page, there was a recognition from the bookstore owner Tian Xuzhai: “I have purchased 120 types of ancient and modern celebrity romances, with one-third of them being the initial engraved clouds.” The catalog is also titled “Overview of Ancient and Modern Novels”, indicating that this “Ancient and Modern Novels” is the overall name of “Three Words”. When the Later Yanqing Hall was re engraved, it was only then titled ‘Yu Shi Ming Yan’.

There is a title on the title page of the Tianxu Zhai engraved version of “Ancient and Modern Novels”, which states that “this Zhai has purchased 120 types of ancient and modern celebrity romances, and now one-third of them are the first carved clouds”. Moreover, there is also the word “A Moment of Ancient and Modern Novels” before the catalog, indicating that “Ancient and Modern Novels” was originally planned to be the overall title of several novel collections. But when the second and third editions of the book were published, they both had their respective titles “Warning to the World” and “Awakening to the World”. However, when the first edition of “Ancient and Modern Novels” was reprinted, the title was changed to “Yu Shi Ming Yan”, so “Ancient and Modern Novels” is now just another name for “Yu Shi Ming Yan”. However, this edition of “Yu Shi Ming Yan” only has 24 volumes, including 21 volumes from “Ancient and Modern Novels”, one volume from “Warning to the World”, and two volumes from “Awakening to the World”. The title reads “Ke Yi Ju Shi Ping, Mo Lang Zhu Xiao”, but it is unclear who he is. The “Yu Shi Ming Yan” mentioned today refers to the forty volume version of the original “Ancient and Modern Novels”. (Introduction reference)

This twenty-four volume “Yu Shi Ming Yan” is a printed edition of Yanqing Hall, titled “Re engraving and Supplementing Ancient and Modern Novels”. It is actually a combination of 21 fragments of “Ancient and Modern Novels”, plus one “Warning to the World” (“False Immortals Causing Great Trouble in Huaguang Temple”) and two “Awakening Perseverance” (“Bai Yuniang Endures Hard to Become a Husband” and “Zhang Tingxiu Escapes to Save Father”).
