The former Chibi Fu was written by Su Shi, a great writer of the Song Dynasty, when he was relegated to Huangzhou (now Huanggang, Hubei) in the fifth year of Yuanfeng (1082) of the Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty. This fu recounts what the author and his friends saw and felt when they went boating in the Red Cliff on the moon night. Taking the author’s subjective feelings as clues, it reflects the author’s happiness from the moon night boating, to the sadness of nostalgia, and then to the idealism of spiritual relief through the form of question-and-answer. In the layout and structural arrangement, Quanfu reflects its unique artistic conception, which is profound in sentiment and penetrating in reason and meaning. It has a high literary status in Chinese literature and has a significant impact on later fu, prose and poetry.
