全书广收博采，收录以山野所产的蔬菜（豆、菌、笋、野菜等）、水果（梨、橙、栗、杏、李等）、动物（鸡、鸭、羊、鱼、虾、蟹等）为主要原料的食品，记其名称、用料、烹制方法，行文间有涉掌故、诗文等。内容丰富，涉猎广泛。
林洪，字龙发，号可山。南宋晋江安仁乡永宁里可山(今石狮市蚶江镇古山村)人。宋绍兴间(1137-1162年)进士。善诗文书画，著有《西湖衣钵集》、《文房图赞》；收入《千家诗》的诗有《宫词》二首、《冷水亭》一首。林洪对园林、饮食也颇有研究。著有《山家清供》二卷和《山家清事》一卷，常被后人引述。
