为晚清画报打开一扇小窗,接晚清社会文化“地气”以画报介入历史,以图像解说晚清,现晚清画报灼灼其华,读晚清生活万千风貌,解画报掌故百般风情。本书选择了《点石斋画报》以外的二十八种晚清画报,所选画报均遵循当年较为重要、存世较多、制作相对精美的三个原则,且每种画报配十到二十幅图像,通过二十则短文介绍二十八种晚清画报,为读者展现了晚清社会生活、教育文化、民俗礼仪的方方面面。这些徘徊于“娱乐”与“启蒙”之间的晚清画报,对于今人直接“触摸晚清”有着决定性的作用,也为我们了解晚清提供了一个难能可贵的视角。
陈平原 广东潮州人,文学博士,北京大学中文系教授(2008—2012年任中文系主任)、香港中文大学中国语言及文学讲座教授、中国俗文学学会会长。曾被国家教委和国务院学位委员会评为“作出突出贡献的中国博士学位获得者”(1991) ;获教育部颁发的第一、第二、第三、第五、第六届高等学校科学研究优秀成果奖【人文社会科学】(1995,1998,2003,2009,2013)等。先后出版《中国小说叙事模式的转变》《中国散文小说史》《触摸历史与进入五四》《大学何为》《北京记忆与记忆北京》《左图右史与西学东渐》等著作三十种。另外,出于学术民间化的追求,1991—2000年与友人合作主编人文集刊《学人》;2001—2013年主编学术集刊《现代中国》。治学之余,撰写随笔,借以关注现实人生,并保持心境的洒脱与性情的温润。

Open a small window for the late Qing pictorial newspaper, connect with the social and cultural “atmosphere” of the late Qing Dynasty, use pictorial newspapers to intervene in history, and explain the late Qing Dynasty through images. Now, the late Qing pictorial newspaper is shining brightly, reading the diverse styles of life in the late Qing Dynasty, and understanding the various customs and anecdotes of the pictorial newspaper. This book selects twenty-eight late Qing pictorial newspapers other than Dianshizhai Pictorial, all of which follow the three principles of being more important, surviving in the world, and relatively exquisite in production. Each pictorial newspaper is accompanied by ten to twenty images, and through twenty short articles, it introduces twenty-eight late Qing pictorial newspapers, presenting readers with various aspects of late Qing social life, education, culture, and folk etiquette. These late Qing pictorial posters that hover between “entertainment” and “enlightenment” have a decisive role in directly touching the late Qing Dynasty for modern people, and also provide us with a valuable perspective to understand the late Qing Dynasty.
Chen Pingyuan, a native of Chaozhou, Guangdong, holds a Ph.D. in literature. He is a professor in the Chinese Department at Peking University (serving as the head of the Chinese Department from 2008 to 2012), a professor of Chinese language and literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the president of the Chinese Folk Literature Society. Has been awarded the title of “Outstanding Chinese Doctoral Degree Recipient” by the National Education Commission and the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council (1991); Received the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth Outstanding Achievements Award for Scientific Research in Higher Education Institutions issued by the Ministry of Education, including Humanities and Social Sciences (1995, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2013). He has published thirty works, including “The Transformation of Narrative Mode in Chinese Novels”, “History of Chinese Prose Fiction”, “Touching History and Entering the May Fourth Movement”, “What is University”, “Beijing Memory and Memory of Beijing”, “Left and Right Histories and the Eastward Spread of Western Learning”, etc. In addition, due to the pursuit of academic popularization, from 1991 to 2000, I collaborated with friends to edit the humanities collection magazine “Xueren”; From 2001 to 2013, the editor in chief of the academic collection “Modern China”. In addition to academic pursuits, I write essays to pay attention to real life and maintain a free spirited and warm temperament.
