The history of the Fugel family can be regarded as a model of unparalleled success stories in the German Renaissance. Starting from the weavers in the second half of the 14th century, the members of this family have rapidly developed into successful merchants, bankers and nobles, reaching their peak when the wealthy merchants Jakob Fugger the Wealthy (1459-1525) and Anton Fugger (1493-1560). Although the family business was nearly bankrupt because of the loans provided to the Hapsburg dynasty in the 1660s, they were still considered the richest people at that time. The Fugel dynasty still exists today and is a famous aristocrat in Germany. Around 1545, Johann Jakob Fugger (1516-1575) commissioned this manuscript to record the genealogy of his generation in detail. The research and compilation of the genealogy was completed by Clemens J ä ger (about 1500-1560), a court envoy, archivist and entrepreneur. Illustrations of the manuscript, including luxurious portraits of family members, emblems and interesting and delicate page patterns, were created by the famous studio of J ö rg Breu the Younger (about 1510-1547) in Augsburg, and were completed in about 1548. Unlike the rest of the collection of the John Jacob Fogel Library, this manuscript has been kept in the family for centuries, and was not sold to Albrecht IV, the Duke of Bavaria, in 1571, and even updated in the 18th century. It was not until 2009 that the Fugel family sold it to the Bavaria State Library. This purchase is due to the generous financial support of Ernst von Siemens Kunststeftung.
