Unusual and Normal is a book published by Shanghai Dictionary Publishing House in 2011. The author is Jin Mainland. The author selects the population situation of Shanghai from 1966 to 1976 as the starting point for the study, which is to build a background for the overall study of the social life history of Shanghai during the “Cultural Revolution” and see many social situations in a profound way. “Unusual and Normal”, from a rare research perspective, has made a detailed record and description of daily life under sports and slogans, so that people can see how the life of ordinary people in Shanghai has worked hard during the ten-year Cultural Revolution.

The 670000-word book is divided into two volumes, describing in detail the details of the lives of ordinary citizens in Shanghai during the ten-year Cultural Revolution. Among them, there are records of citizens’ food, clothing, housing and transportation, grain, oil and vegetable supply, and whether pork is purchased with tickets; There is also an analysis of the marriage rate and divorce rate under the voice of revolution and purity; The detailed historical data and figures in the book reveal the hidden corruption and trade under the slogan of “loyalty” of the Cultural Revolution. For example, some people take advantage of everyone’s fanatical worship of Mao Zedong to develop underground production lines to process Chairman Mao’s badges and sell them on a large scale, while others buy various kinds of newspapers and then send them to hidden underground printing sites in other places to create underground cultural revolution newspapers, Employ hundreds of newsboys to sell for personal gain… “During the Cultural Revolution, there were power for personal gain, corruption, and underground sex transactions. It is not like some people miss the Cultural Revolution saying that there were no corrupt officials in the Cultural Revolution.” Jin said with a wave.

The publication of “Unusual and Normal” is only the first of Jin’s publishing plans. Later, he will publish two follow-up works along the direction of the social life history of the Cultural Revolution. Housing issues during the Cultural Revolution: how to forcibly occupy and replace houses, distorted gender relations during the Cultural Revolution, suicide figures during the Cultural Revolution, etc

Jin mainland was born in Shanghai in December 1949. He is now a researcher at the Institute of History, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. He was engaged in the study of the history of educated youth in China and the urban social history of Shanghai from 1966 to 1976. Amateurs focus on Olympic history and sports culture.
