清代的中日贸易，也就是所谓的长崎贸易。因为日本德川幕府于宽永十年(1633)至十六年(1639)间发布一连串限制人民出国，禁止基督教，实施锁国政策。仅允许唐船（中国船）和荷兰船至长崎港贸易。这幅长卷《长崎唐船贸易绘卷》描绘的便是清朝中日商贸往来的景象。因此，中日间之往来，全赖中国贸易船单方面进行。透过长崎贸易，日本不仅可获取所需的商品，同时亦可吸收外国的科技文化，以及海外的各种情报讯息。
有关近世日本的对外关系研究，以往偏重对贸易制度的考察。在文化交流方面，由于“锁国”体制对人员往来的严格管理，渡日的中国商人及水手在1689年以后，被限制居住于长崎之“唐馆”内，少有机会与一般日本人接触往来。导致人们对江户时代日本的对外交流有着封闭的印象。事实上，透过中国商人（其间亦有不少文人、医生及及其他技术者）之往来，除输入大量中国商品外，在饮食、风俗、宗教、文化艺术等方面，对日本社会亦产生重大影响。
Sino-Japanese trade in the Qing Dynasty is also known as Nagasaki trade. Because the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan issued a series of restrictions on people going abroad, banned Christianity and implemented the policy of locking the country between 1633 and 1639. Only Tang ships (Chinese ships) and Dutch ships are allowed to trade in Nagasaki Port. This long scroll “The Painting of the Trade of Tang Boats in Nagasaki” depicts the scene of trade between China and Japan in the Qing Dynasty. Therefore, the exchanges between China and Japan depend solely on the unilateral conduct of Chinese trade ships. Through Nagasaki trade, Japan can not only obtain the goods it needs, but also absorb foreign science, technology and culture, as well as various overseas intelligence information.
In the past, the study of Japan’s foreign relations in modern times focused on the investigation of the trade system. In terms of cultural exchange, due to the strict management of personnel exchanges under the “lock country” system, Chinese businessmen and sailors who crossed Japan were restricted to live in the “Tang Pavilion” in Nagasaki after 1689, and had little opportunity to contact with ordinary Japanese. This has led to a closed impression of Japan’s foreign exchanges in the Edo era. In fact, through the exchanges of Chinese businessmen (including many scholars, doctors and other technicians), in addition to importing a large number of Chinese goods, it also has a significant impact on Japanese society in terms of diet, customs, religion, culture and art.
