本书是袁珂先生阐述广义神话思想以解决神话研究考察对象范围问题的专著，是研究中国神话基础理论的一部开山之作。袁珂先生在数十年整理和研究中国神话的过程中，逐渐认为中国神话的范围要从狭隘的圈子里跳出来，扩大视野，才能见到中国神话的真正丰美。在本书中，他以广义神话思想为基本认识，引经据典，考察了中国神话在流传中的演变，和它对后世文学艺术的影响，以及历代神话整理者、研究者在整理、研究工作中的一些问题，是对中国神话发展形成整体概念的必读经典。
袁珂（1916—2001），当代中国神话学大师。1946年，任职台湾省编译馆，开始系统化地研究中国神话。到1949年回到四川，继续从事文学暨神话学的研究；1978年调入四川省社会科学院任研究员，1984年担任中国神话学会主席。
袁珂先生著述颇丰。1950年，第一部神话专著《中国古代神话》出版，这是我国第一部较系统的汉民族古代神话专著，由此奠定了袁珂先生的学术声望。之后，袁珂先生先后撰写了《古神话选释》《神话论文集》《袁珂神话论集》《山海经校注》《巴蜀神话》（合著）等20多部著作及800余万字的论文。袁珂先生的多数著作在香港、台湾均多次重印，并且被翻译成俄、日、英、法、意、西班牙、捷克、韩国、世界语等多种语言。其作品还被中国、日本、美国、新加坡等国入选学校课本。

This book is a monograph by Mr. Yuan Ke that elaborates on the broad concept of mythological thought to solve the problem of the scope of mythological research objects. It is a pioneering work in studying the basic theory of Chinese mythology. During the process of decades of organizing and studying Chinese mythology, Mr. Yuan Ke gradually believed that the scope of Chinese mythology needs to jump out of narrow circles and broaden his horizons in order to see the true richness of Chinese mythology. In this book, he takes the broad concept of mythological thought as the basic understanding, cites classics, and examines the evolution of Chinese mythology in its dissemination, its impact on later literature and art, as well as some issues raised by mythological organizers and researchers throughout history in their organization and research work. It is a must read classic that forms a comprehensive concept for the development of Chinese mythology.

Yuan Ke (1916-2001) is a master of contemporary Chinese Mythology. In 1946, he worked in Taiwan Province Compilation and Translation Museum and began to systematically study Chinese mythology. In 1949, he returned to Sichuan and continued to study literature and Mythology; In 1978, he was transferred to the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences as a researcher, and in 1984, he served as the chairman of the Chinese Mythology Society.

Mr. Yuan Ke has written extensively. In 1950, the first monograph on mythology, “Ancient Chinese Mythology,” was published, which was the first systematic monograph on ancient Chinese mythology in China, thus establishing Mr. Yuan Ke’s academic reputation. Later, Mr. Yuan Ke has written more than 20 books, including Selected Interpretation of Ancient Mythology, Collection of Mythological Essays, Collection of Mythological Essays of Yuan Ke, Annotation of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, and Bashu Mythology (co authored), as well as more than 8 million words of papers. Most of Mr. Yuan Ke’s works have been reprinted many times in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and have been translated into Russian, Japanese, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Czech, Korean, Esperanto and other languages. His works have also been selected as school textbooks by countries such as China, Japan, the United States, and Singapore.
