The photography collection of “The Journey to China of the Russian Scientific Trade Mission” contains 139 photos. In 1874-1875, the Russian government sent a scientific trade delegation to China to investigate the growth prospects of China’s trade by land, find suitable places to establish consulates and factories, and collect relevant information about the Tongzhi Rebellion that swept over many regions in western China at that time. At that time, the delegation consisted of nine people, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ilian A. Sosnovskii of the Russian General Staff, including geologist Matusovskii, scientific officer Pavel Iakovlevich Piasetskii, photographer Adolf Erazmovich Boiarskii, and Chinese and Russian translators, And three Cossack soldiers. The delegation set out from St. Petersburg, passed through Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), Beijing and Tianjin, arrived in Shanghai, and then continued to travel along the Yangtze River, through the Silk Road, through Hami Oasis and Jaisangpo, and finally returned to Russia. Boyersky took about 200 photos. These photos are valuable resources for studying this historical stage of China. Most of them are included in this album and later became part of the collection of Thereza Christina Maria established by the Brazilian Emperor Pedro II. Finally, Pedro II donated it to the National Library of Brazil.
