《李明仲营造法式》诞生于公元1103年，当时宋徽宗赵佶亲自颁布诏书，批准这套书的出已经版。书中不仅总结了汉唐以来的中国建筑传统，而且用大量篇幅列举了包括石刻、木刻、彩画等十三种，共一百七十六项工程的尺寸标准以及操作要领。以往传世的古代技术书籍中，大多重文字，图样往往很少，而在《李明仲营造法式》中则附有大量的珍贵插图，具有很强的直观性，从中可以看出当时的建筑风格；不仅如此，这套书还提出了一整套木构架建筑的模数制设计方法，直到现在它的一些理论，仍然是研究我国古代木构建筑工艺和规章制度的宝贵资料。即使在当时，《李明仲营造法式》也是世界上关于木构建筑的最先进的典籍。
