“马印”是幕府武士在战场上的标志，类似于战旗，通常是一面旗帜，但有时也会是一个三维物体，显示他本人（而非部队）的所处地点。“御马印”是大名马印，通常比一般的马印大，它是战场上一方军队的核心，也是敌方火力打击的焦点。较小的马印（包括“小马印”）装在皮筒子里，筒子系在足轻的腰带上。较大的马印则用带子牢牢地系在架子上，由足轻背着。奔跑或风力较大时，足轻会用绳子使马印保持平衡。如果马印较大，会由两个人分别拉一根绳子来固定。
