源氏物语题材衍生出许多竞技游戏，花札游戏有贝合，投壶有投扇兴，而香道有源氏香。
源氏香，为享保年間（1716〜1735），据《源氏物语》的记载设定的组香。源氏香纹图共计五十二枚，对应源氏物语五十四回目，卷首桐壶、卷尾梦浮桥不计入内。52这个数字取决于以下玩法。
其玩法为，
1、取香木5种，各分为5包，总共25包。
2、打乱其秩序，任意取其中的5包，先后放在香炉中薰，香客依次捧炉闻之，反复五次。
3、在纸上记下5种香的异同。当五包香木赏完后客人依源氏香纹的记法在纸上记入5种香的异同。
香纹的书写方式是，先在记录纸上从右到左画五条竖线，代表五种香，然后用横线将自己认为是同样香味的香连起来。如第一号香和第三号香相同，第二和第五号香相同，就标记为上图（夕雾）。共计52种组合。
较特殊的一点，据说该香还有占卜之用。
第1次和第2次的香相同时，将5根竖线的左1和2顶端连起来，为空蝉。而第2次和第3次的香相同时，为夕颜。所得的源氏香纹也因该卷的内容，而有占卜吉凶，或与季节相应等用法。如空蝉成功地避开了源氏的各种诱惑，又不失女子之情趣，结局不错，为吉兆。而夕颜，容颜甚美，先是不能与情人相守，后托身于源氏却被鬼魅夺去性命，为凶兆。
源氏香为香道中组香的一种，其它组香形式有竞马香、矢数香、名所香、古今香、十种香等。古今香同样取材于文学《古今和歌集》，竞马香则源于京都“上贺茂神社”的社祭，其玩法各一，兼具香道、竞技与文学。
香道工具有：香盆、香盒、香札、香匙、香箸、莺针（用于刺香包的针）、火箸、试香盘，割香台、以及闻香炉等。

The way to write the fragrance pattern is to draw five vertical lines from right to left on the recording paper, representing five kinds of fragrance, and then connect the fragrance that you think is the same fragrance with horizontal lines. If the No. 1 incense is the same as the No. 3 incense, and the No. 2 incense is the same as the No. 5 incense, it is marked as the above picture (Xiwu). There are 52 combinations in total.
More specifically, it is said that the incense can also be used for divination.
The first and second incense are the same, and the top of the left 1 and 2 of the five vertical lines are connected to form an empty cicada. And the second and third fragrance are the same as the sunset. Because of the content of the volume, the obtained Genji incense pattern also has the use of divination, or corresponding to the season. Such as empty cicada successfully avoided all kinds of temptations of Genji without losing the interest of women. The ending is good, which is a good omen. And the sunset face is very beautiful. First, she can’t stay with her lover, and then she stays in Genji but is killed by ghosts. It is a bad omen.
Genji incense is one of the group incense in the incense path, and other group incense forms include Racing Horse incense, Yashu incense, Mingsuo incense, ancient and modern incense, and ten kinds of incense. The ancient and modern incense is also derived from the literature “Ancient and Modern Harmony Songs”, and the horse racing incense is derived from the social sacrifice of the “Shanghe Mao Shrine” in Kyoto. Its playing methods are different, and it has both incense, athletics and literature.
