和欧洲人爱玫瑰、郁金香等寄托热烈情感的花不同，日本的古植物图谱，略为严肃、严谨，而且大概是受中国文化的影响，画家们往往偏爱那些象征人性，和诗情画意相衬的植物，比如，梅兰竹菊、牡丹、芙蓉、莲花。《白川侯莲谱》收藏于东京国立博物馆藏，是日本18世纪的植物图谱之一，这一朵朵准确、精美、饱满、娇艳的花儿，永恒定格在那个瞬间，在历史尘埃中栩栩如生。
Unlike the flowers that Europeans love roses, tulips and other flowers to express their warm feelings, the ancient plant atlas of Japan is a little serious and rigorous, and probably influenced by Chinese culture. Painters tend to prefer those plants that symbolize human nature and match poetic and pictorial feelings, such as plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, peony, hibiscus and lotus. The Lotus Manual of the Marquis of Shirakawa, collected in the National Museum of Tokyo, is one of the plant atlases of Japan in the 18th century. These accurate, exquisite, full and beautiful flowers are always fixed at that moment, and are lifelike in the dust of history.
