Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759 St. Hubert 1840 Paris) was born into a family of painters in Saint Germain, France. At the age of 23, he became a student and assistant of the famous floral painter Gerard van Spandonck (1746-1822) who worked at the National Museum of Natural History. He later studied under the botanist Charles Luis Echtel de Brudell (1746-1800) and systematically mastered the natural science knowledge of plant morphology. These botanical knowledge enabled Redoud to endow his paintings with strict academic and realistic qualities.

During the French Revolution, Josephine built a magnificent rose garden at the Melmason House on the outskirts of Paris. It is rumored that her rose garden grows 30000 roses, almost including precious varieties from around the world. Her gardener was also the first person in history to attempt to artificially cultivate rose seeds. Out of respect for her love for roses, during the Battle of England and France, the two countries suspended hostilities in order to transport roses to Josephine’s ships. Josephine invited Redoud to go to the Rose Garden to paint roses, which led to the publication of an album known as the ‘Rose Bible’.

In 1788, Redouard was appointed as a full-time painter by the French royal family. In 1825, Charles X appointed him as a knight. Most of his books were published under the sponsorship of the royal family. After the July Revolution in 1830, he became a full-time painter for the new French Queen Mary Emily (1782-1866). Redoud illustrated nearly 50 botanical works throughout his life. I was compared to the “Raphael of the Flowers” and the “Rose Painter” by the nobles and upper class, and became famous for a while. He passed away on June 20, 1840 and was buried at the La Chez Cemetery in Paris.

Compared with several contemporary painters, Redoud’s works are more scientific and beautifully painted, with diverse flowers, elegant colors, and natural color transitions. The three most widely circulated art collections by Redouard are “Les Liliacees,” “Les Roses,” and “Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs,” of which “Les Roses” is the most famous. The 169 charming roses in the book have become classics of the world’s roses. The romantic rose comes from the least romantic labor.
