This book is a collection of 48 paintings by British painter Samuel Daniel in Africa for “Sketches of Animals and Landscapes of South African Tribes”. The illustrated text was written by Somerville and Sir John Barrow.

Samuel Daniel sketches animals that naturally inhabit life, and his works have been praised for their accuracy and attention to detail. This book was published in 1820.

Samuel Daniel (1775-1811) was a British painter and draftsman who arrived in South Africa in December 1799.

In 1801-2, led by P.J. Truter and William Somerville, he was appointed as the secretary and artist of the expedition from Cape of Good Hope to Bethesne. After returning to the UK, Daniel published the book ‘African Scene and Animals’ (1804-5) with the help of his uncle painter Thomas Daniel and his brother, painter and sculptor William Daniel.

He later moved to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where he painted landscapes and sketched characters, and ultimately died of dengue fever.

After his brother’s death, William published “Sketches Representing the Native Tribes, Animals, and Scene of Southern Africa” and collected 48 sculptures based on Samuel Daniel’s paintings in Africa. The text of each illustration was written by Sir Somerville and John Barrow,

Sir John Barrow was a British geographer and explorer who also participated in early British exploration activities in South Africa. Samuel Daniel sketches animals that inhabit their natural habitat, and his works are praised for their accuracy and attention to detail. This book also includes sketches of characters encountered during exploration and several vivid landscape paintings.
