Teddy Boy (English name: teddy boy) is a Hong Kong comics with the theme of triads. Niu Lao, the editor in chief, Lun Yuguo, the pen in chief, started serial publishing in 1992 and was published by Haoyi Co., Ltd. or Peace Publishing Co., Ltd. The story tells the rise and fall of Chen Haonan, who rose from a bottom member of the club to a red stick within three years (succeeding the “Hong Xing Society” in Causeway Bay Area on August 25, 1993), and later became the leader of the “Hong Xing Society” (the highest speaker of the club) in 2007. The story emphasizes the expression of “brotherhood” and “righteousness in the world”, as well as the harsh criticism of the current society. On April 30, 2020, the 28 year serialization of the manga “The Puzzler” ended.

Because of the success of the cartoon “Puzzled Boy”, Niu Lao’s publishing house has successively published the same type of Jianghu gangster cartoons, such as “Hong Xingzai”, “Dong Yingzai”, “Dragon Pan and Tiger Ju Portland Street”, “Jianghu Family”, “Puzzled Girl”, “red-light district”, “Spicy Brother”, etc., and the characters in these cartoons are more interchangeable with the comic characters in “Puzzled Boy”, Some characters have become important figures in the book “The Ancient Puzzler” in the future. This move makes the comic world in the book “The Ancient Puzzler” more realistic and vast.

The manga “Puzzle Boy” has been adapted into a series of movies, making it a famous gangster film in Hong Kong. The directors of this series of biographies are all Liu Weiqiang. Since the release of the first episode “The Man of the Ancient Puzzle in the Jianghu” in Hong Kong, it has been very popular, so many sequels have continued to be produced, and the overall momentum is unparalleled. Even some of the characters’ lives have been made into movies one after another. This series of movies gave the audience a rough idea of the triad, and the actors who starred in this series stepped out of the entertainment industry. However, the accompanying public opinion often criticized this film for excessively heroizing underworld characters. This film has once again sparked a wave of gangster movies, and other film production companies have ventured in this direction, resulting in many other types and series of gangster movies. In order to promote and cooperate with the film “The Man of the Ancient Puzzle in the Jianghu” that was released at that time, Niu Lao’s publishing house was authorized by Taiwan’s Dongli Publishing House Co., Ltd. to publish a series of “The Ancient Puzzle” comics, and renamed it “Man in the Jianghu” in the Taiwan version. It was published every 15th of each month at a fixed price of NT $130 per volume, with each issue consisting of about 100 pages, which is the content of the four issues of the Hong Kong version. The content of ‘People in the Jianghu’ has also been translated from Cantonese colloquialism in Hong Kong to Taiwanese underworld style vernacular.

In addition, manga characters and content have also become the blueprint for online games multiple times. In 2002, Tianyu Technology Co., Ltd. produced “Gupuzi Online”, in 2005, “Zhiao Online Game Group” launched “Gupuzi Meaning Online”, and in 2010, “Huichuangji Hong Kong Limited” developed “Dragon and Tiger Dance K1 Online”, which are widely popular among players.

Niu Lao’s original name was Wen Qiming, and his birthday was on October 15, 1961. The zodiac sign belongs to the ox. My interests include smoking without leaving my hands, swimming, raising dogs, diving, and writing. I have studied martial arts, Western boxing, karate, free combat, and taekwondo in my youth. The idols are Luo Dayou, Madonna and Jacky Cheung.

When neighbors were young, they thought their voice was as dull as a cow, so they got the title of “Bull Man”.

Although Niu Lao studied martial arts in his youth, he is famous for his martial arts manga (underworld manga) “Ancient Puzzler”. But Niulao’s real person is not what some people imagine as a warrior, let alone a member of the underworld. But rather one of the few cultured and knowledgeable individuals in the realm of Hong Kong and Macau; Although directed towards adult readers, “The Ancient Puzzle” is not a blindly addictive and pornographic martial arts manga. Under the careful management of the Cowherd, the essence of “The Ancient Puzzle” is closer to a profound work that values human nature, power, and literary drama.

The manga master was Shangguan Yulang (Huang Junyue), Niu Lao was a disciple of Shangguan Xiaobao (Kuang Dongyuan), and Mo Junyue was his enlightenment teacher. He had joined the “Kuang Family” (August 22 Painting Society) and the “Yulang Group”, and on April 1, 1992, he established the “Haoyi Limited Company” with Chen Kelin, Wen Jianhong, Qiu Ruixin, and Lun Yuguo. Later, he himself established the current “Peace Publishing Limited Company”. His brother Jacky Man also helps with administrative work at “Peace Publishing Co., Ltd.”.

Niu Lao attaches great importance to cultivating comic talent and once established the “Niu Family Class”. Lun Yuguo, Qiu Ruixin, Wen Riliang, Bi Yile, Hu Daquan, Yan Zijian, and Wu Wenhui have all received guidance from Niulao.

Niulao is the most manga character under its umbrella that has been made into a movie; It is also the first manga under its umbrella to be used as a blueprint for online computer games; It is also the first Hong Kong cartoonist to launch a three-day magazine.

In addition to the main manga, he also published an article under his real name in his column “Wen Geng Cao Mang” in Xinbao.

(Note: The main writers Lun Yuguo and Qiu Ruixin are currently unavailable)
