八卦太极拳是由董海川根据太极拳的以柔克刚特点创编的一种刚柔相济的传统拳种。此拳兼具太极与八卦之优长，极具健身与技击价值。清末时期武学昌盛，武术门派林立，其中有号称为内家派的太极拳、八卦掌、形意拳。当时八卦掌祖师董海川约同治六年间，对于杨式太极拳的功法与形意拳的用劲颇为赞赏，于是实验性融入太极拳的行功法与小部分的形意劲，试图为八卦掌的习练寻找更佳的途径，于是八卦掌的太极行功法就此诞生，名曰八卦太极掌。
Bagua Taijiquan is a kind of traditional boxing created by Dong Haichuan according to the characteristics of Taijiquan, which combines hardness with softness. This fist combines the advantages of Tai Chi and Bagua, and has great fitness and martial arts value. In the late Qing Dynasty, martial arts flourished and there were many martial arts schools, including Taijiquan, Baguazhang and Xingyi Boxing, which were called Neijia School. At that time, Dong Haichuan, the founder of Baguazhang, was very appreciative of Yang-style t’ai chi ch’uan’s skill and Xingyi Quan’s strength in about six years of Tongzhi. Therefore, the experimental integration of Taijiquan’s walking skill and a small part of the shape and meaning strength tried to find a better way for Baguazhang’s practice, so the Baguazhang’s Taijixing skill was born, called Bagua Taijizhang.
