The Book of the Dead in Ancient Egypt is an ancient and grand collection of 27 poems, including incantations, hymns, lengthy explications, various ceremonial truths, divine names, etc. They are generally carved or written on the walls of pyramids or tombs, and some are printed on coffins or carved on exquisite stone coffins. Because the original text is hieroglyph, which has long been lost, it was only in the early 19th century that hieroglyph were found to be in contrast with Coptic (a kind of writing dominated by Greek characters).
