李存义（1847年-1921年），原名存毅，字肃堂，后改名存义，字忠元。生于清道光二十七年，河北省深县南小营村人。少时家贫，以帮人赶车为生，及长习长短拳技并周游各地。中年师从形意拳名家刘奇兰学艺，后至京与程廷华等为友，并兼从董海川习八卦掌，其八卦掌技艺多为程廷华所授。曾任两江总督督标把总，后至保定开设万通镖局，兼收徒授艺。1900年，李先生以53岁之龄，毅然投身义和团，手持单刀上阵，奋起抗击外敌，一时间，”单刀李”之名不胫而走。晚年弃镖行，专志授徒。宣统三年(1911)，与叶云表在津创办中华武士会。后任教上海精武体育会、南洋公学院（交通大学前身）等地。先生生前，于北方武术界威望甚高。1921年去世，终年74岁。著名弟子有黄柏年、郝恩光、尚云祥、马玉堂、李星阶、傅剑秋、陈泮岭、田鸿业、薛颠等。
Li Cunyi (1847-1921), formerly known as Cunyi, was named Sutang, later renamed Cunyi, and was named Zhongyuan. Born in the 27th year of Daoguang in Qing Dynasty, he is a native of Nanxiaoying Village, Shenxian County, Hebei Province. He was poor when he was young. He made a living by helping people drive cars. He learned long and short boxing skills and traveled around the country. Middle aged students learned martial arts from Liu Qilan, a famous Xingyi Quan master. Later, they went to Beijing to make friends with Cheng Tinghua and others, and also learned the Eight Trigrams Palm from Dong Haichuan. Most of his Eight Trigrams Palm skills were taught by Cheng Tinghua. He once served as the governor general of Liangjiang Governor, and later went to Baoding to open Wantong Escort Agency, where he was also an apprentice. In 1900, at the age of 53, Mr. Li resolutely joined the Boxer Rebellion and fought against foreign enemies with a single knife. At that time, the name of “single knife Li” spread widely. In his old age, he abandoned the escort shop and was dedicated to teaching disciples. In the third year of Xuantong (1911), he and Ye Yunbiao founded the Chinese Samurai Association in Tianjin. Later, he taught Shanghai Jingwu Sports Association, Nanyang Public College (predecessor of Jiaotong University) and other places. Before his death, he had a high prestige in the northern martial arts circle. He died in 1921 at the age of 74. Famous disciples include Huang Bonian, Hao Enguang, Shang Yunxiang, Ma Yutang, Li Xingjie, Fu Jianqiu, Chen Panling, Tian Hongye, Xue Dian, etc.
