所谓“怪话”，就是指精怪故事。它和神话、仙话、鬼话同出一辙，均在古老的民间信仰基础上产生，并形成富有特色的神、仙、鬼怪故事系列。作为描述精怪以及跟精怪关联的人物的故事，其最大的特征，就是具有奇幻性，无论是故事情节，还是其表现手法。故事的编织者往往信奉起自然力，将现实中的人物、事情按照自己的意愿，尽量地加以夸大。故事中的主人公——“物精”、“物怪”，都是由动物、植物和各种无生命的器物变幻而来的。这些物，因自身获得某种灵性和神力，或被某种灵性和神力所依凭，因而变为精怪。
它们既能化为人，又能复现原形，既通人性，又具物性。它们介入人们的生活，或降祸于人，或赐福于人。由此而产生的故事，我们管它叫怪话。

The so-called “strange story” refers to a supernatural story. It is similar to myths, fairy tales, and ghost tales, both of which are based on ancient folk beliefs and form a unique series of stories about gods, immortals, and ghosts. As a story describing monsters and the characters associated with them, its biggest characteristic is its fantasy, whether it is the story plot or its expressive techniques. The weavers of stories often believe in natural forces and exaggerate the characters and events in reality according to their own wishes. The protagonists in the story – “Wujing” and “Wuguai” – are all transformed from animals, plants, and various inanimate objects. These things, due to their own acquisition of a certain spiritual and divine power, or being relied on by a certain spiritual and divine power, become spirits and monsters.

They can both transform into humans and reproduce their original form, connecting with both human nature and materiality. They intervene in people’s lives, either causing harm to them or blessing them. The story that arises from this is called a strange story.
