在周易预测学中，判断事件应期是个较难的点，“事有吉有凶，人有祸福”，断易天机，最关键的一环就是断准应事之期。定准应期是一切信息预测的最后阶段，也是关系到信息预测成功与否的重要一步。
古今有大量关于应期的描述，但是在实战中，这仍是许多高手难以突破的一道难关。一般来讲，应期的确定必须经过这样分析思路：一是选取用神（与占事、匙语、求测问题有关系）；二是吉凶判断（与象数派描述事情经过和理气派点评事情的结果有关系）；三是应期确定（与五行生克制化和合冲刑害以及旬空墓绝有关系）。
断应期大致有两大种类：一种是有应期：可以推断出具体年、月、日、时的。二类是无应期：不可以用具体日期来确定的，往往预测结果同时也是应期，根本就不必察看进行时的应期。
