为了能让这部中国古代的巅峰巨著以完美的现代方式呈现，以适合现代读者的阅读品位，《图解本草纲目》对原著进行了两大编辑创新：其一，删繁就简。《本草纲目》原著篇幅过于宏大，因此，我们进行了切于实用的精编，只收入今人常用、能访的物种，疗效确切的附方，以使其在日常生活中真正发挥养生、疗疾的功效。精编后，保留品物1200多种，易行有效、切于实用的附方2066条，仍不失其“大全”的容量。其二，图版丰富实用。首次提供了500多幅准确逼真的彩色植物手绘图，不仅方便自然生态爱好者按图索骥，在野外探寻药趣，也具备十分的观赏价值；同时提供了300多帧中药材的实物照片，方便专家级读者在药店、药材市场赏析鉴别；书中还收录了《本草纲目》权威古本金陵本的1031幅线描古图。从最现代到最古朴的三种层次的图版，为《本草纲目》增添了新的价值。
