张道陵（34—156），一名张陵。东汉沛国丰(今江苏丰县)人，字汉辅。本太学生，博通五经。曾任江州令。顺帝时入鹄鸣山(一作鹤鸣山，在今四川大邑境内)修道。著道书二十四篇，自称“太清玄元”，谓逢“天人”，授以正一明威之道，创立道派。受道者出五斗米，故称“五斗米道”。自号“天师”(一说系道徒对他的尊称)，亦称“天师道”。以符水咒法为人治病，教人思过，从者户至数万。建二十四治，立祭酒分领其户。“陵死，子衡行其道;衡死，鲁复行之”。后裔继承道法，世居龙虎山，称“张天师”。
Zhang Daoling (34-156), also known as Zhang Ling. He was born in Peiguofeng (now Fengxian, Jiangsu) during the Eastern Han Dynasty, with the name Hanfu. I am a student of Bentai and have a broad understanding of the Five Classics. Formerly served as the governor of Jiangzhou. During the reign of Emperor Shun, he entered Huming Mountain (formerly known as Heming Mountain, located in present-day Dayi, Sichuan) to cultivate his way. He wrote 24 books of Taoism and claimed to be the “Xuanyuan of the Taiqing Dynasty”. He called himself the “Heavenly Man” and bestowed the righteous and powerful Dao, establishing the Taoism School. The recipient of the Tao produces five buckets of rice, hence the name “Five Buckets of Rice Path”. Self proclaimed “Heavenly Master” (some say it is a revered title given to him by Taoist disciples), also known as “Heavenly Master Dao”. Using the Fu Shui Mantra method to treat illnesses and teach people to reflect on their past mistakes, from the household to tens of thousands. Build a twenty-four governance system, and establish sacrificial offerings to divide households. When Ling dies, Zi Heng follows his path; when Heng dies, Lu Fuxing follows his path. Descendants inherit Taoism and reside in Longhu Mountain, known as “Zhang Tianshi”.
